Range Technician

Range Technicians work under the supervision and guidance of professional range and natural resource specialists providing technical support and assistance in range conservation, range management, and range improvement. Performs the following or duties of similar complexity:
GS-04/05:
Monitors distribution and movement of livestock. Observes, records, and reports any signs of unauthorized grazing use/trespass animals and assists in roundup of trespass livestock. Makes observations of wildlife use. Serves as a team member for range inventory efforts. Includes duties such as mapper and entails collecting, compiling, and recording vegetation data on each site write-up area (SWA). Assists with vegetation counts by species and/or life form from small plots or transects to determine such information as survival of seedlings, species present, distribution of plants, and volume of growth. Provides impressions of range conditions, and similar observations. Collects and records data in range studies such as condition and trend use, utilization, actual use, and climatological data. Collects, compiles, and records water sources data (wells, pipelines, reservoirs, etc.) and boundary lines (allotments, fences, natural barriers, etc.) for range inventory mapping efforts. Inputs data on grazing allotments into the automated system. Provides assistance in identifying needed improvement projects (wells, reservoirs, fences, vegetation projects, etc.) and inspecting/inventorying condition of existing projects. Occasionally uses an engineer's level or transit and/or GPS as well as instruments needed to make rough measurements necessary in locating conservation projects in relation to established markers, computes yardage of simple earth dams and dikes or similar projects. Physical Demands Work Environment:
Work performed in an office environment is sedentary with adequate lighting and ventilation. Much of the time is spent in the field requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending and lifting with exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, wildlife, and other hazards are common. Adherence to all safety procedures is required. Six (6) months of general and six (6) months of specialized work experience. Examples of general experience is experience that provided a broad familiarity of range management programs or techniques of collecting scientific data. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting in the conservation, regulation, and use of lands for grazing; assisting in range research activities; assisting in the operation of a livestock ranch or in assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; assisting in the inspection for the presence of noxious weeds; locating and treating weeds with designated herbicides; and preparing accurate records of all treatment; -OR- Successful completion of two (2) years (90 quarter or 60 semester hours) of study above high school that included twelve (12) semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than three (3) semester hours in mathematics is creditable; -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. GS-05:
One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting in the conservation, regulation, and use of lands for grazing; assisting in range research activities; assisting in the operation of a livestock ranch or in assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; conducting preliminary reconnaissance of range areas to select possible sites for re-seeding, fresh clearing, water spreading systems, etc.; or serving as an instrument person in laying out contour furrows, determining the contour line and staking out the line; -OR- Successful completion of a full four (4)-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position or (b) that included at least twenty-four (24) semester hours in any combination of the following courses:
forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than six (6) semester hours in mathematics is creditable; -OR- A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience. General

Experience:

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
